Founded in 1973 by Al O’Connor, the NIU Steelband is the longest continuously performing university steelband in the nation. Under the direction of O’Connor and Clifford Alexis, the band made many significant and memorable appearances including at Yankee Stadium, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC)--where they were the first steelband ever to perform--at the World of Drumming Fesitval in Seoul, South Korea and two tours of Taiwan.

The tradition continues under the direction of Liam Teague, who studied under O’Connor and Alexis at NIU. Teague is an accomplished performer and composer hailed as “Paganini of the Steelpan” as well as an accomplished educator. He is the recipient of an NIU Board of Trustees Professorship Award and a Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professor Award.
