Join us for an enlightening virtual presentation with Distinguished Research Professor Elizabeth Gaillard, Ph.D., an expert in the chemical and biological processes behind age-related eye diseases. This online program offers an accessible look at one of the most pressing vision issues facing older adults today: Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
AMD is the leading cause of blindness among older individuals in industrialized countries. As the disease progresses, the retina becomes damaged due to the loss of protective melanin pigment and the buildup of toxic age-related debris called lipofuscin. Gaillard and her research team are investigating a naturally occurring process that helps clear lipofuscin in younger eyes—and why this mechanism becomes less efficient as we age. Their findings could pave the way for future therapies that slow or prevent retinal damage.
This engaging talk will break down the science behind AMD, highlight promising research developments, and help you better understand the biological changes that affect vision over time—all from the comfort of home.
About the speaker:
Elizabeth Gaillard is a distinguished research professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, with a joint appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences at NIU. Her research program explores the molecular processes that contribute to age-related eye diseases, with the goal of developing more effective treatments that preserve and protect vision.
