With five years of experience in higher education, Marlo Barnett plans to give her ideas on how the university can continue academic excellence and recruit students.

Marlo Barnett, M.S. ’12, Ph.D. ’17, has joined the NIU Alumni Association Board of Directors this year because she wants to stay connected to the university, improve its programs and increase the student population.

Barnett, who works as a technology expert with Chicago Public Schools (CPS), has set the bar high to be successful. Her academic achievements and involvement in campus and professional orgranizations are evidence of that.

“I am proud that I graduated from the M.S. and Ph.D. program at NIU with all A’s,” said Barnett, who has degrees in instructional technology. “I am also proud that I was an active student on campus and held elected and appointed positions in student organizations.”

As a student, she was the vice president of the Black Graduate Student Association, treasurer of the Graduate Student Association for the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, a member of the Democratic student organization and a member of several task force committees.

Barnett has worked in higher education for five years and is active in professional organizations.

Before working for CPS, she was as an instructor at Waubonsee Community College and worked at NIU (graduate assistant) and Chicago State University.

She is a member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, and Illinois Computing Educators.

Since becoming a board member, Barnett has helped promote alumni events and news on social media and is expected to be an asset in planning and development since she has knowledge and skills in project management.
